Bf's phone message fresh or out of order?

i heard a vm on bf's cellphone from another woman. he said that his messages are out of order, and it was actually very old. annoying that he saved it, more annoying if he is lying to me about it. is it possible for cell phones (verizon plan) to shuffle the order of voicemails?
