How do I register a new tenancy for tax purposes?

I am letting a new property, however I don't have a tax number nor UTR yet. I've been told I will need to fill a tax return for self-assessment. But how will HM Revenue & Customs be notified that I have a new source of income? Is there any way I can register the tenancy agreement with them?
